A Quirky Little Country

posted Tuesday, 14 November 2006

Which country:

--Measures its progress in terms of Gross National Happiness instead of Gross National Product
--Has a national dress code, which everyone must wear in public
--Has a matrilineal society, where women, rather than men, inherit the family land
--Does not have a single traffic light and no railway system
--Has archery as its national sport and passion
--Charges all foreigners a flat fee for every day spent in their country
--Has had television only since 1999
--Bans usage of plastic bags
--Is the only non-smoking nation in the world

Stay tuned for more on The Kingdom of Bhutan, my latest favorite little country...

The most handsome men I have ever met (other than India, of course!) are from Bhutan. All of those men were monks, so that gives India some sort of edge!

Can't wait to read more, Basia!

And how large is Bhutan, and what of crime/judicial system and government in general?

And - the height of buildings is restricted to be no higher than 5 storeys. I really liked that in Bhutan. The view of, and connection to, the Himalayas is never blocked. I appreciate how Bhutan has carefully adopted only what it needs from global trends and technology.

Great photo of the apricot seller! In what part of Bhutan did you find him? (Found your blog through Google alerts.)

Karen: The apricot seller was on the road between Wangdue and Thimphu. Where are you from, Karen? Do you have a blog of your Bhutan travels?

Prasi: OK, that's better! :o)

Kevin: Bhutan is about the size of Switzerland - about 300 km long and 150 km wide. It has roughly a million people (the numbers range from 700,000 to 1,500,000). It's currently a monarchy, but scheduled to transition to democracy in 2008. Up until 2000, crime was rare. Sadly, it is now steadily increasing, although still nothing like in other countries.

Clare: Hmmmm...now I know your taste in men...it's the holy types... :o)

I was on that road between Wangdue and Thimphu --but did not see the apricot seller!

I'm in the USA. No I don't have a blog (kept a travel journal the old-fashioned way, pen to paper). Have lots of photos which I took in Bhutan though, which I'll upload to Flickr soon.
