Flowers of Rochester: Daffodils

posted Saturday, 26 April 2008

Daffodils (Narcissus pseudonarcissus) are one of the few flowers in my garden that don't get chomped down by deer, squirrels, or other rodents. That's because underneath their golden beauty is an alkaloid poison.  Looks sure are deceiving though, because they are one of the most cheerful, ubiquitous flowers around.

This looked more like a gardenia than a daffodil to me, but apparently the group known as double daffodils have clusters of petals such as this one.

This weekend was the daffodil festival in Meriden, CT, which I missed. So I was very happy that you provided photos for me of this happy flower. I want to know @ the blue background too...they look regal. (Also, when I forward your flowers I become very popular!!) Sharon

Donna Gardner: Aaah yes, I remember those winters in the summer, down under...;o)

Kevin G: I love the ladybug too. They are such whimsical creatures.

Dale: The blue background is a combination of two things: shooting from below the flower, so that you get at least some blue from the sky, and adjusting the contrast level afterwards. I'm always crouching down underneath flowers to get a sky background, and when I use a micro lens, it just becomes a big blue blur. I love the way the blue brings out the yellow (like Sharon said, makes it look regal), so I sometimes adjust the color level to make it even more blue. The last one almost looks like it has a silky blue cloth behind it; I love that effect. I was having a really hard time photographing the daffodils; the all-yellow petals were looking too one-dimensional and just weren't drawing me in at all. So I decided to challenge myself to do something a little different. Glad y'all liked it!

Danie: Glad I could oblige! I don't think I ever saw any daffodils while I was in Chennai - though of course there were many other kinds of gorgeous flowers.

Sharon: CT has a daffodil festival?? I didn't know that. I need to make a note of that for next year. See my note to Dale (above) regarding the blue background.

Shannon: That's one broken record I never get tired of hearing. ;o)
