Keep Those Traffic Lights Out Of Our Country

posted Friday, 17 November 2006

1999 was a banner year for Bhutan. That was the year TV and the internet were introduced into the country.

It was also the year Bhutan got its first traffic light, on the main road in the capital city of Thimphu.

The Bhutanese had no problem adjusting to TV and the internet. But the traffic light -- that was taking things too far. The reaction was immediate:

"Too ugly."
"Too impersonal."
"Not effective."
"Get rid of it."

The light was promptly dismantled, never to return.

Traffic was put back in the hands of this whimsical traffic cop, who is a major tourist attraction as he stomps his feet, clicks his heels, and keeps traffic flowing with exaggerated motions.

I just loved watching this traffic cop in Thimphu and I enjoy your photo of him! I was in Bhutan a month ago and miss it very much; I so loved it there. I found your blog today thanks to a google alert I have set on all things Bhutan.

Karen: Hi! Welcome to the blog. Yeah, the traffic cop was quite entertaining. I loved Bhutan too. Such a peaceful, beautiful country.

Clare: Oh dear, my audience is getting demanding...how's this? (see next entry)

It has to be a very peaceful country because unlike other nations its ruler tracks Gross National Happiness and not Gross domestic Product. I wish India and other countries learned from bhutan. http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1016266,00.html
