Laid Back Ulcer Land

posted Monday, 11 December 2006

If I had to describe Bhutan in one word, it would be laid back.  No one ever seemed in a hurry, and there was always a feeling of calm and peacefulness as I traveled throughout the country.

So I was surprised to learn that peptic ulcer was a common health problem for the Bhutanese. This is usually attributed to their enormous consumption of chillies, both red and green. The spiciness of some of their dishes, such as the very popular chilli cheese curry, rivals those of south India. Although no one I talked to considered their dishes too hot,  their stomachs would beg to differ!

Everywhere we drove, there were reminders of this country's favorite food -- bright red garlands hanging from windows, laid out on rooftops for drying, and sold in every market.

Nice pics again. I've often wondered what the result of excessive eating of hot chillies is. Just as I suspected. The hottest I've eaten was in Sri Lanka. Boy do they have seriously hot curries there.

With all that chilli consumption, I can see how peptic ulcers would be a problem. I've noticed that the older I get, I can't take "hot" food to stomach, as I could when I was in my late teens/early 20's. Now I just wimp out.
