Soles On Fire

posted Sunday, 23 October 2005

Here's one from the Vegetarian Festival that I'd like to try someday: Firewalking. Actually, it's more like Burning Coal Running.

I've seen this on several other occasions and always wondered whether I could do it...

These people don't look like the can control the pain as much as the ones who were piercing themselves!

Gosh Basia, with everything else you have tried- why not? You constantly amaze me! And I thought it was just kosher pickles that made you happy!

Shannon: Yuuummmmmmmmmm.....kosher pickles....we don't have them in India :o(

How about running across hot coals while munching on a kosher pickle? Now that would be really living...:o)

Trina - yeah you've got a point there - these guys need to work on the trance presentation a little bit more, don't they?

Hi Basia You would definitely do this. The practice went through a phase of being popular with "hippies" in Australia about ten years ago. A friend hosted a firewalk event, attended by about 50 would-be walkers, including me. As a typical, adventurous, can-do-anything Aries type, I had no doubt I would do it until I got to the part where you sign a form saying that you "are aware that this practice may cause burns requiring hospitalisation". That was a moment of doubt. The other moment was when I took my turn at raking the fire and discovered how extremely hot that bed of coals really was. I did walk (quickly). I definitely wasn't in any sort of trance. I'd have to admit the main motivator was peer group pressure! "If she can, then I'm damned sure I can." It was very hot and I did burn my feet but only mildly. The whole process was totally fascinating. On the other hand, I definitely wouldn't do it in India! And you'd probably have to cross-dress for that one too.
